Day 7 - May

 Hi blog,

Today was an awesome day flying. I had a great time. In the morning, I got up and had a nice study block because I had a later flying session, so I got a nice 3 hours of studying in. I worked on some more of the charts as well as reading more about stalls and emergency circumstances. Then, when I got to the airport, I did the preflight all by myself and we didn’t hesitate to get up in the air. I taxied to the runway and did a pretty decent job taxiing, so I was happy with that. Once we got in the air we practiced emergency engine failure simulation, and I had to take the engine to full idle, find a place to land, and come within 1000 feet of landing there before brining in more power and climbing again. After, we worked on some turns around a fixed point on the ground which I found challenging because it was hard to understand how to adjust my bank angle to account for the wind in my turns. I also practiced some S turns over a power line which I enjoyed. After, I came home, studied for 3 more hours, and went for a run. Overall a great day but tomorrow may be too windy to fly.

Week 1 Reflection

Whats up blog, I can definitely say we had a good week this week. I learned and studied a lot and am happy with my progress. I have really been enjoying flying so far and learning the ways of airplanes. I started out on the ground just running through how the preflight works and my checklists to get a sense of how flying begins. We also talked a lot about wings and lift and learning what forces contribute to the plane flying.  Once we got in the air after some days of heavy wind, we finally got up into the air. I taxied to the runways which was kind of challenging steering with the rutter pedals. I would like to get more practice at this because it is an integral part of taking off keeping the plane straight down the runway so if I want to progress I need that too. Once we were in the sky, I was practicing my slow climbs and descents, as well as turns of various bank angles. Day 3 - May 10th

 Hey there,  Today was yet another amazing day up in the sky. It started off early with some exercise and studying about two hours working on my traffic commands, and then we went to the airfield. We began the session with another weather briefing on the iPad, and worked through the airmets, notams, and more. Then, we got out to the plane and completed our interior and exterior checking, before turning on the plane and taxiing to runway 30, different to runway 35 we had used the previous day. My instructor did most of the work taking off but I mirrored his controls to get the feel of how it works. Maybe we will try taking off next time. Once we got off the ground, I took over and was responsible for our climb to 3,000 feet, our cruising altitude. Then, I worked a lot on turning to specific headings on my gyrocompass and making sure I was using the right amount of bank angle to level out in the right location. Day 1 - Monday May 8th

 Hi there, Today was the first day of senior project and my first blog. The weather conditions today were unfortunately very windy so we did not get to go flying but got to learn on the ground. I got a nice workout and some studying in before heading to the airport for the afternoon. We began by reviewing the four fundamentals of flying: taking off/ascending, descending/landing, flying straight and turning. Then we looked at some charts and learned about weather patterns as well as radio commands and more. Then we looked at a map of the airport and learned more about communicating with air traffic control on the radio. Next, we went out to the plane and learned all the basic controls. We went through both the exterior and interior checklists and there was so much information it was very overwhelming.
